Did you know that figs don’t just grow on trees around here? This paper fig shell is one of the treasures washed in from the recent low that pushed up from warmer waters (I believe that’s how all the Portuguese Man o’ Wars got here too). While NC is within its “normal” range, they aren’t common this far north. Keep your eyes open while on the beach, and even though it’s really hard to do if something is living in a shell you find, please be kind and return it to the sea instead of taking it home.
