Killer Whales -- Did you know that since 1884, there have been two Orca stranding events along the Outer Banks? The first one occurred on Sept. 19, 1974, in Kill Devil Hills and the second one at Hatteras Inlet involving multiple animals on May 28, 1981. The Outer Banks Marine Mammal Stranding Network has been responding to and recording strandings since 2010. Prior to that, staff members from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C., responded to strandings on the Outer Banks dating back into the 1800s. Our region has one of the longest-running stranding records that exists, reports Marina Doshkov, Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator for Jennette's Pier.
