Recently, one of our tour guides extraordinaire, Cheryl "Shorty" Short, had an unforgettable experience along the Currituck Banks Reserve. Quick with her video and safely staying her distance, she was able to capture this phenomenal few moments.
"I walk the forest often, but this was the most horses I’ve seen at one time (5) and definitely the most action. I was hiding behind a tree at one point, off the trail which they were occupying.
This is a great place for a nature walk under the live oak trees of the maritime forest. While horse sightings are rare, the possibility of spotting horses in this area is definitely increased in the springtime as the horses are enjoying lots of fresh water grasses, plants, and sprouting cattails. There’s a mile and a half, well-marked trail that leads you through the forest, as well as 1/3-mile boardwalk (wheelchair accessible) which takes you back to the Currituck Sound and marsh area. At the end of the boardwalk is a really nice deck, highly recommended for viewing spectacular sunsets. Even if you don’t catch a glimpse of a wild mustang, surely you’ll spot something that will enlighten your senses—migratory birds, turtles, deer, etc. There are many signs along the boardwalk educating visitors about ongoing research in the area as well as wildlife they might encounter on their journey."
